The Florida Basic Driver Improvement Course (BDI) is a 4-hour course approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). It covers defensive driving techniques, Florida traffic laws, and safe driving practices. Florida drivers elect the BDI option with the clerk of court to keep points off an eligible ticket. You can use it up to 5 times in a lifetime, and no more than once every 12 months. You still pay the full fine; the course prevents points from being added. Serious offences such as DUI or reckless driving are not eligible. Insurers may also discount a premium; that is separate from the 5-time limit. Until FLHSMV approves us, this course is not open for enrollment.

Once the course is approved and you finish, you can download the certificate immediately. For ticket or point avoidance, completion is electronically reported to the Florida DHSMV; you may also need to give a copy to the clerk of court. Yes! Florida allows drivers to elect the BDI option to avoid points from an eligible traffic ticket. Here's how it works:

  • You must elect the BDI option with the clerk of court before your deadline.
  • You can use the BDI for point avoidance up to 5 times in your lifetime, but no more than once every 12 months.
  • You must still pay the full fine for the ticket — the course only prevents points from being added.
  • Not all violations are eligible — serious offenses like DUI or reckless driving cannot be dismissed.

  • 5 times maximum in your lifetime for point avoidance.
  • Once every 12 months — you cannot elect BDI again until 12 months after your last election.

  • The discount may last for 3 years.
  • There's no limit to how many times you can take the course for insurance purposes (the 5-time limit only applies to point avoidance).
  • Contact your insurance provider before enrolling to confirm eligibility and discount amounts.

Upon successful completion:

  • You will receive a certificate of completion that you can download immediately.
  • For ticket/point avoidance: Your completion is electronically reported to the Florida DHSMV. You may also need to provide a copy to the clerk of court.
  • For insurance discount: Provide your certificate to your insurance company.

Our Florida Basic Driver Improvement Course is currently under review by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), so it is not available for enrollment. Once the FLHSMV completes its review, the course will open and completions will be reported to the state in the usual way. Let us know if you would like to be notified when Florida goes live.

If you received a ticket in another state, you'll need to check with that state's court to see if they accept a Florida BDI course. Generally, you should take the defensive driving course approved by the state where you received the ticket. The Florida BDI is specifically for Florida violations.
