Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic

Not yet — our certification is pending. We have built the clinic to the Virginia DMV's eight-hour driver improvement standard, including the identity verification and exam rules the DMV requires, but the DMV has not yet completed its review, so the clinic is not open for enrollment.

Only a DMV-certified clinic can cause safe driving points to be added to your record. If you have a court or DMV deadline, use a clinic already on the DMV's certified list rather than waiting on us. Contact us if you would like to be notified when Virginia goes live.

Virginia drivers take the clinic for four main reasons:

• Voluntarily, to earn safe driving points that offset demerit points on your record.
• Because a court ordered it after a traffic violation.
• Because the DMV requires it — for example, to keep or reinstate your driving privileges.
• For an insurance discount from insurers that offer one for clinic completion.

Drivers under the age of 20 may take the clinic online or in a classroom.

Virginia rates drivers with demerit points for violations and safe driving points for good driving. Completing a DMV-certified clinic is one way to earn safe driving points:

• 5 safe driving points may be awarded for satisfactorily completing a clinic.
• Once every 24 months. You cannot earn clinic points again until two years have passed.
• 5 is the maximum balance. No driver may accumulate more than five safe driving points.
• Under Va. Code § 46.2-498, five demerit points are subtracted from your accumulated total. If you have fewer than five demerit points, you receive a reduction and/or an award of safe driving points.

No — you get one or the other, not both. Under Va. Code § 46.2-498, a single clinic completion earns either safe driving points or an insurance premium reduction, and only once in a two-year period.

You may take the clinic again one year after completion to receive whichever benefit you did not take the first time. Tell us which one you are attending for when you register, because it determines how your completion is handled.

The Virginia clinic is eight hours, made up of six content modules plus the final exam. Virginia requires the full eight hours, so each page has a minimum time before you can advance. You can complete it across as many sessions as you like — your progress is saved automatically.

The Virginia DMV requires online clinics to confirm that the person doing the work is the person enrolled. Virginia does not permit webcam proctoring or facial recognition, so we verify identity two ways instead:

• Email code at the start. Before your first module, we email you a 6-digit code that expires in 10 minutes. This is a one-time step.
• Security questions during the course. You answer five personal security questions when you register. We ask one of them again as you enter modules 2 through 6, and once more before the final exam.

Answers are not case-sensitive, but they do have to match what you entered at registration — so answer in a way you will remember.

The Virginia exam is 50 multiple-choice questions and you need 80% to pass — 40 of the 50.

• Retakes are still unlimited and free — they are simply spread across separate days.
• Each attempt draws a fresh set of questions from a larger bank, so you will not see the same exam twice.
• Your progress is saved, and our AI assistant is available during the exam to explain concepts.

Virginia identifies drivers by a DMV customer number rather than by a license number, so our Virginia registration form asks for your customer number in place of a driver's license number. You can find it on your Virginia driver's license or ID card, or by logging in to your Virginia DMV online account. We also ask for your middle name, which the DMV uses to match your record.

Once you pass the final exam:

• Your certificate of completion is available to download immediately.
• Submit your certificate to whoever required the clinic — the court, the DMV, or your insurance company.
• If you were court-ordered, keep a copy and note your court's deadline; the court decides whether safe driving points follow.
