Course Specific FAQs
The Missouri Driver Improvement Program (DIP) is an 8-hour defensive driving course approved by the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) and the Missouri Safety Center. It allows eligible drivers to avoid having points assessed on their Missouri driver record for a moving violation.
To qualify for the program:
- You must have a conviction date for a moving violation before enrolling.
- You must complete the course within 60 days of your conviction date.
- You may take a DIP course only once every 36 months.
- You cannot take the course if you hold a Commercial Driver License (CDL).
- The course must be listed as approved on the Missouri Safety Center’s official DIP provider list.
- If your violation occurred while operating a motorcycle, you must complete the Basic Rider Course instead of a standard DIP course.
- Out-of-state license holders are not eligible to take the Missouri DIP for point reduction.
Missouri law requires the course to be timed for a minimum of 8 hours. The course may be completed online at your own pace, as long as the total seat time equals 8 hours.
If you receive a Missouri moving violation:
- You must appear in court for your case.
- Ask the judge for permission to complete a Driver Improvement Program (DIP) course to avoid point assessment.
- The court decides whether to approve your participation — approval is not automatic.
Once you complete your course:
- Your course provider will issue a Missouri Form 4444 (Driver Improvement Program Completion Certificate).
- You must submit Form 4444 to the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) within 15 days of completing your course to receive point reduction.
- Mailing instructions are printed on the form.
- You may also need to return the signed form to your court clerk, depending on your court’s procedures.
No. Completion of a DIP does not remove the ticket or conviction from your driver record — it only prevents the points associated with the violation from being assessed on your Missouri driver’s license.
You may take the DIP course only once every 36 months (three years).
The Missouri DIP only applies to Missouri-licensed drivers who received a Missouri ticket. It does not apply to:
- Missouri drivers ticketed in another state, or
- Out-of-state licensed drivers ticketed in Missouri.
You can review Missouri’s official point assessment and violation statute, Missouri Revised Statute § 302.302, which explains how points are added or removed from your driving record.
