The North Dakota Defensive Driving Course is a 4-hour course approved by the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT). NDDOT accepts it for a 3-point reduction on your record, and — separately, through the court — as an alternative to points being entered for some violations.

NDDOT accepts this course for a 3-point reduction on your record, once every 12 months. Separately, for some non-criminal tickets assigned 5 or fewer points, you may elect the course in lieu of points being entered — you have to tell the clerk when you post the bond, within 14 days of the citation, and choosing that path forfeits the ordinary 3-point reduction. Yes. NDDOT will reduce your total by up to 3 points after you complete an approved defensive driving course, once every 12 months. When you finish our course, we email your certificate to NDDOT at [email protected] for you.

If your driving privileges were suspended or cancelled because of points, the reduction is not applied until that period is served.

For a non-criminal traffic violation assigned 5 or fewer points, you may elect an approved driver training course instead of having those points entered. The requirements are strict:

  • Pay the bond within 14 days of the date on the citation.
  • Tell the clerk of court, when you post the bond, that you are electing the course. You cannot do this after the case is finished.
  • Finish the course within 30 days of notifying the court. NDDOT must have the certificate by then; we send it the day you pass.
  • You have not used this election in the previous 12 months.
  • The offence is not one listed in N.D.C.C. § 39-06.1-05 and is not assigned 6 or more points.

Choosing this alternative forfeits the ordinary 3-point reduction. You cannot use both for the same stretch of record.

NDDOT lists approved courses by duration; this one is the 4-hour defensive driving course. North Dakota does not require a course timer, so you can move through it at your own speed. It is online and your progress is saved between sessions.

NDDOT allows the 3-point reduction once every 12 months. The in-lieu-of-points election is also once every 12 months, and using it costs you the reduction.
