Anyone may take the course. The 3-point reduction applies to an Idaho driving record that already has points on it, once every three years. This course does not dismiss a ticket and it does not remove a conviction: a driver may not remove a traffic conviction by attending a defensive driving class. A city traffic safety education program under Idaho Code § 50-336 is a different program.

Yes. IDAPA 39.02.71.400 lets ITD remove three points from the violation point count total after you complete an approved defensive driving class:

  • Once every three years, measured from the completion date.
  • Points come off the total, not off a particular conviction.
  • If you have no points on your record, you cannot bank a reduction for a future ticket.
  • Once ITD has suspended you for excessive points, this class cannot undo the suspension.

A city traffic safety education program under Idaho Code § 50-336 is a different programme. It has to be offered by the city and elected when the citation is written. Completing our ITD class is not that programme, and using one can disqualify you from the other.

No. ITD’s rule is explicit: a driver may not remove a traffic conviction from their record by attending a defensive driving class. If a page or a person tells you otherwise, they are describing a different rule than the one that governs this course.

We email your certificate of completion to the Idaho Transportation Department for the 3-point reduction as soon as you pass, and copy you on it. There is nothing for you to file with ITD. You can also download the certificate immediately.

For an insurance discount, send the certificate to your insurer and ask whether they accept an ITD-approved class. That is their policy, not ITD’s.

Some Idaho insurers offer a discount for an approved defensive driving course. The amount, if any, is set by the insurer. Ask them before you enroll.

Yes. It is approved by the Idaho Transportation Department, which is what makes the 3-point reduction possible. Whether a particular court wants the certificate for some other purpose is the court’s call.
