The Missouri Driver Improvement Program (DIP) is an 8-hour defensive driving course. Completing it, when a court orders and verifies it, stays the assessment of points for an eligible moving violation — it does not remove the conviction from your record. Missouri stays points only when a court with jurisdiction orders and verifies the Driver Improvement Program. Ask the judge; approval is not automatic. You then have 60 days from the date of conviction to finish, and you cannot have used a DIP for this purpose in the previous 36 months.

We issue Missouri Form 4444 and a completion certificate when you finish. The court must forward a record of completion to the director of revenue within 15 days — that clock is the court's duty, not a filing deadline we put on you. Follow the mailing instructions on the form and ask the clerk if they also want a copy.
The statute accepts a completed DIP in lieu of points when all of these are true:
- A court with jurisdiction orders and verifies the course. Approval is not automatic.
- You finish within 60 days of the date of conviction.
- You have not used a DIP (or motorcycle-rider course) for this purpose in the previous 36 months.
- The violation is one the statute lists: a general moving violation, speeding, or careless and imprudent driving (or a subsection-3 offence). Not every ticket qualifies.
- The violation was not committed in a commercial motor vehicle, and you have not been issued a CDL and are not required to obtain one — in Missouri or any other state.
- If the violation happened on a motorcycle, the statute requires a motorcycle-rider training course approved by the state highways and transportation commission, not this DIP.
The operator must be given the option to complete the program online or in person.
If you received a Missouri moving violation:
- Appear in court for your case.
- Ask the judge to order a Driver Improvement Program so that points are stayed.
- The court decides. The director of revenue accepts the course only when it is ordered and verified by the court.
Once you finish:
- We issue a Missouri Form 4444 and a Driver Improvement Program completion certificate.
- The court must forward a record of completion to the director of revenue within 15 days. That 15-day clock is the court’s duty under the statute, not a filing deadline we can impose on you.
- Follow the mailing instructions printed on Form 4444, and ask your court clerk whether they also want a copy.
§ 302.302 stays points the director of revenue would assess on a Missouri record. Confirm with the Department of Revenue before you enroll if you hold an out-of-state licence or the ticket was written in another state — the statute does not spell out those cases, so we will not either.
